History
Palmyra was first founded in 1819, and was one of the first settlements in the Mississippi Valley. It was also on of the first cities to have its own cemeteries. At the time, most land owners had family cemeteries on their farms. In 1861, Mayor Joseph W. Pryor wanted a few acres of land to be the Palmyra City Cemetery, so that the whole town could have a special place for their loved ones to be memorialized. In 1870, a group called the Greenwood Cemetery Association was formed for the purpose of purchasing, planning, and organizing the Palmyra Cemetery. The eight acres were purchased for the cemetery for around $1,000, but later a portion was sold to St. Joseph Catholic Church of Palmyra. Roughly 20 years later, the Palmyra Cemetery ran out of spaces and ended up combining back with the Palmyra Cemetery. The two cemeteries later became one, and is now known as the Greenwood Cemetery that we know today.
